1-Manik trecena daily digest: begins 17 November 2016

Preface: Clearing the air

Keren Ann (8-Ix, next week) is a musician of a magical kind. If you let her in she’ll work her spells on you. Very much like Perry Farrel who shares her Mayan birthday, her musicmanship and sheer skill stand out from the first notes you hear. The sound is clean and precise, the volume levels are just right, and the mastering is BOOM.

To be born on the 1-Manik trecena and sing about not going anywhere is like a contradiction in terms. Manik stands for perpetual travels out in the wild, unknown parts and less-trodden paths of the land. The spirit of the four-legged animals is embodied on this plane to pace the earth within neighboring woods and well beyond them. When a stag (another word for Manik) is not going anywhere he is probably too busy protecting his community and offspring diligently.

However, being a stag, you can never know when he’ll disappear, maybe not ever to return. Then you realize that his young bucks have grown up already, and the pack guard is being releaved by new recruits. It was good timing after all. The aging stag is now off on a new pilgrimage, reliving his days of youth and hormones.

In Hinduism, this is known as being a Varna Prasta – a forest dweller.

His spirit dwells still around his old breeding and child-rearing grounds. Sons and daughters tune into the frequency left behind by their ancestors, and learn the way of their kind by resonance.

1-Manik: Path of blessings

1-Manik: The lone pilgrim

Born on this day: Bob Schieffer, Matthew Modine, Franz Beckenbauer, Antonis Samaras (Greek president), Moses Montefiore, Ernst Alexanderson

Today I plant a seed of healing

Today I plant a seed of healing and cleansing

The sun came up clear and warm this morning. The skies were clean and pristine, no clouds and no aerosol debris. Every morning can seem just like the one before it, but this one didn’t. I was different.

Comfort runs deep enough to elude me. It begins with my body vehicle – where I sit and how long I sit there; the paths I take from and to. It continues with the people I talk to and meet. Then comfort gets too comfy dwelling on ideas that are “same, same, but different”. It goes on and on and it’s all-pervasive.

It’s time to try something that really scares me.

Manik is essentially this overall impression. He is the lone pilgrim.

“There’s more to life than this.”

2-Lamat: Doubled rabbit

Born on this day: Elvis Presely, Cal Ripken Jr., Kenny Wheeler, Gary Webb

"The image is one thing and the human being is another...it's very hard to live up to an image." - Elvis Presley (2-Lamat)

“The image is one thing and the human being is another…it’s very hard to live up to an image.” – Elvis Presley (2-Lamat)

The restless 1-Manik, ever-looking for some new adventure, constantly evolving spiritually – finds his/her match on 2-Lamat. In other words: be careful of what you wish for!

Lamat is an ancient word for multitasking. Lamat-types can have many different interest going around on their mind at any given time. For example, I was born 8-Lamat and I can safely say it’s been that way ever since I can remember my conscious self. All Lamat-types also have Ik on their right-hand cross, so the craving to learn more about many different things (shining star in all directions) can be explained this way, too.

Today I meet Lamat on a 2-day. In numbers, 2 is the one and only natural number that multiplies its predecessor (1). When you go from 2 to 3 it’s already a lesser “leap”.

Two is also related to a question, or “duality” in the parlance of our times. So the lone pilgrim 1-Manik who was edging to try something new and terrifying yesterday wakes up to a showstopper question – “why bother? What’s out there that isn’t right here/now?” So many destinations – and Lamat is bountiful.

However, Lamat’s comfort zone is low self-esteem, a.k.a. the argumentative “black hole mode” Lamat.

You heard me, rabbits.

3-Muluc: Active liquid

Born on this day: Mick Jagger, George Washington (1st US president), Bertrand Russell, Kyra Sedgwick, Rob Lowe, Shirley MacLaine, 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami

"Make the most of the Indian hemp seed, and sow it everywhere!" - George Washington (3-Muluc)

“Make the most of the Indian hemp seed, and sow it everywhere!” – George Washington (3-Muluc)

The third day’s sunrise was a deja-vu revision of that first, transparent one I witnessed the day before yesterday. It couldn’t be identical, though, because sunrises never are. I was different again.

I remembered the first seed of rebellion vs. Comfort I sowed then. Last night’s dilemma (2-Lamat) has to be transcended by action. My spiritual horizons never used to came up to me while I sat and watched them in awe, and this time it’s going to be just the same. I need to meet the horizon at least half way.

So I made some calls and got organized. My 15 minutes of fame in the shower made me think in 5th gear. Water on my skin does that to me every single time. I pick up a thread, pull it until I become self-conscious about it, then pick up a better thread. When I finished I came up with my daily wisecrack:

The sunrise is just a symbol. It means Wake Up!

Waking up can mean so many things, but many of them can be summed up by some kind of “responsibility”. Is it the grownup type? Job, bills, kids? Na, not this time. On the lone pilgrim’s journey this means loving my own destination to the point of not letting go of it. This approach can no longer be called “responsibility”, but it’s so much better than it.  Muluc has to be passionate about her paths of devotion, otherwise she’ll turn to wherever her passion guides her.

Dedication. I can’t get around without it; I can’t get around it without falling right back on comfort and my own personal conformity. When fully awake, Muluc has to be on the move, and she takes me along with her. If I’m wise I’ll let her take the lead.

The number 3 is a dynamic power source that knows no boundaries. Whatever I decide to dedicate myself to becomes total and engaging. I interact closely with that goal I’m focused on, I nurture it and it nurtures me back. Indeed, dedication can easily be both a means and an end at the same time.

Then I just went out the door.

Procrastination is a nice word for a self-inflicted guilt trip. Dwelling on it just doesn’t help anyone.

4-Oc: Complete devotion

Born on this day: Branford Marsalis, Kevin Bacon, David Broza, Tzipi Livni

Bravery sets the boundaries of spiritual healing

Bravery sets the boundaries of spiritual healing

Devotion offered freely is a powerful engine. But even engines have limits, and so must be treated every once in a while with some tender loving care. I know people who do the devotion thing all day long. Other people love them, they get tons done, but mental fatigue builds up in deep and secret places. Then one late afternoon they realize they’ve got nothing more to give.

Oc is the guardian, defending his clan from ignorance and malicious trespass till his tomb, and then again beyond it. This is the flavor which makes him/her a favorite and down-to-earth kind of pack leader. Tonight I let Oc take care of me, and keep his vigil in case I overdo devotion and forget about having fun doing it.

When coupled with the stabling effect of the number 4 Oc becomes a very astute kind of canine. One who guards boundaries wisely and consistently.

5-Chuen: Power of Art

Born on this day: Flea, Richard Wright (Pink Floyd), Cat Stevens, Tim Roth, Marisa Tomei, Lasse Hallström, Vin Scully

"The Koreans have influenced us a lot, through their loving attitude, evil dictatorship, and funky bass playing." - Flea (5-Chuen)

“The Koreans have influenced us a lot, through their loving attitude, evil dictatorship, and funky bass playing.” – Flea (5-Chuen)

The road leading to the temple took several days off my terrestrial tenure span, and gave me many profound memories in return. When I tell stories about my trip people are entertained, especially the ones who don’t believe half of them. Those are usually the ones that don’t share my pet peeve of doing truly scary things.

Before reality became just another entertaining story it was real and present. Walking the road up to the mountain temple wasn’t easy, but the hardships were not as significant as the magnificent way in which they were negotiated. My old self arrived at unfamiliar surroundings, as new strands were woven into my dusty, familiar tapestry. Living the road was like putting brush and paint to a canvas, or like playing live in front of the living.

It was ALIVE, and it still is.

Art empowers me by inspiration. I’m a curious lone pilgrim, in constant awe of new things I learn every day and in every way.

6-Eb: Traditional path

Born on this day: Jerry Lee Lewis, Liberace, Joe Perry (Aerosmith), Juliette Lewis, Ray Liotta, Mel Brooks, Christopher Marlowe (baptised today), Mariano Rivera

"Hope for the best. Expect the worst. Life is a play. We're unrehearsed." - Mel Brooks (6-Eb)

“Hope for the best. Expect the worst. Life is a play. We’re unrehearsed.” – Mel Brooks (6-Eb)

Like the veins of the great mother, roads course through the old country, tracing the same routes for many years. The steps you took yesterday for the first time have been already taken by many feet before yours. Maybe one of your forebearers walked here before, and now you walk with him.

As any stranger in a strange land you rely on community and companionship to satisfy your mundane needs. Total strangers offer hospitality and advice, provide maps and directions. They let you into their world and homes, treating you as a fellow soul feeding off the mother.

After eating your fill and resting, other needs begin to replenish and balance off. Things like having someone really listen to me, and reciprocating. Cravings like sitting still and enjoying company. Loosing track of time by simply sharing life with fellow humans. You realize the mundane and the elevated are one and the same.

Someone once said something about the meek. The Eb energy is very much about respect, which is the only type of foundation any community can have. Respect guides you when you ask a stranger for help. Respect guides the stranger who bravely reaches out back to you.

However, respect has nothing to do with authority.

7-Ben: Purpose and destiny

Born on this day: Hafez al-Assad, Hermann Göring, Phil Jackson, US civil war ends

"The only one who really knows about the Reichstag is I, because I set it on fire!" - Hermann Göring (7-Ben)

“The only one who really knows about the Reichstag is I, because I set it on fire!” – Hermann Göring (7-Ben)

One afternoon I took a hike with my host up one of the hills. I couldn’t tell how he picks his way, cutting through overgrown thickets and revealing hidden paths. But I followed him anyway, maybe because I had no other choice, or perhaps because his staff was made of local wood, and it gave its bearer at least a measure of soft authority.

The view I got just wouldn’t allow me to dwell on any kind of thought.

When we stopped he pointed to the horizon and told me the name of a close community. I knew it was time to go.

Seven has that sense of staying where I am, right up until that point when I gather what’s mine, get up and start walking again. When I arrived it felt right to stay here forever. Now it’s clear my stay has elapsed, and no more rest is needed.

Onwards to whatever experience my destiny has in store over the hill. It was destiny that made me stay and share life with the local community. Now the same destiny shifts polarity and becomes dynamic again. Destiny begins here and now, even if it seems like I’m going nowhere for a while.

Wanderlust, as a perpetual way of life and destiny, is the fuel of the pilgrim, whether he’s by his own fireplace or blazing a fresh, unknown path.

Wild, untamed nature dwells in a realm beyond what the word “beautiful” can ever express. It is magical in the most mundane and spectacular sense of magic; the deep magic that makes the flowers bloom is too much for even the god of spring to fathom.

In the silent, bubbling wells hidden in caverns lies the essence of the Mayan archetype known as the jaguar. The purity of real Mountain Dew, its vitality and freshness – all embody the hallmark of Yucatan jungle evolution. A feline so magical it is a demigod in the bush.

The jaguar’s magic is present in any manifestation of nature. Besides the springs, the jungle itself is guarded by the energy of Ix, along with sacred shrines, overlooking the entire green and brown vista.

On the way back home from my pilgrimage my thoughts took on a pristine quality. Something was cleaning up inside, and the journey with all the experiences I had are what made this clensing happen. I felt very strong and healthy, as if I just got out of a morning shower.

My life had one kind of routine going before I left for this trip. This kind was now doomed to be discarded. I realized I cannot go back to being the person I was. My family and neighbors that are now waiting for me to return are waiting for someone who I used to be.

That said, when they see me they’ll still be able to recognize me immediately. We’ll all be very happy for a while, as my long-awaited return is celebrated. Then I’ll slowly begin picking up the threads and ties of my regular life.

Adaptation is on my mind as I pick my way down the landscape increasingly familiar to me. The new and the old adapt to each other, making good ties stronger and bad ties fall apart.

12-Edznab: True completion

My grandson came to visit me the other day. He came to say goodbye before leaving on a long and far away journey. As he knew growing up, out of all the elders in the family I was the one who traveled the most.

So we sat down together in the living room with our drinks and I told him the stories that no one remembers anymore, about what happened on the way to the temple, how amazing it was to be there, how stupid I was going around backward countries with next to no luggage or equipment.

How lucky he was today for being on the doorstep with one foot in adventure.

That was the last time he saw me.

1-Manik trecena daily digest: begins 2 March 2016

1-Chuen trecena daily digest: begins 28 September 2015

The pontiff went back West

“I hope as a brother of this country to offer words of encouragement to those who are to guide the nation’s political future, in fidelity to its founding basis.”

– Pope Francis (9-Caban), 23 Sept. 2015 @ the White House

In his quote above, does his eminence (who by mere accident shares his Tzolkin birthday (9-Caban) with Walter White, Gustavo Frig, and Richard Dawkins) actually reveal a strong support of the US constitution?

Does fidelity to founding basics mean financial independence and the abolition of the central bank? Could be. Pope Francis did mention greed and unbridled capitalism as evils that requires immediate curbing.

Apropos, “Fidelity” is a masonic keyword, repeated thrice before closing a lodge.

He also referred to himself as a brother of the US, offering advice to its leaders. Well, besides being widely used among black Americans, ‘brother’ is the basic title of each person attending a masonic lodge. This brother then proceeds to give his advice (i.e., his orders) about staying loyal to ‘founding basis’ – most of which were penned into American law and consciousness by freemasons.

A brother of the faith. Whatever faith. Family is, after all, stronger than faith, and ‘brother’ is a word almost as loaded as ‘sister’.

Two days later he was the keynote speaker at the UN General Assembly. Masonic overtones continued to come up, most notably at the very closing of the speech, when he blessed the assembly thus:

“Upon all of you, and the peoples you represent, I invoke the blessing of the Most High, and all peace and prosperity. Thank you.”

– Pope Francis 25 Sept. 2015 @ the UN

‘the Most High’? I remember once I was really high, and that’s all I can remember about it. But ‘the Most High’ is someone obviously much more important and grandiose. It’s a politically correct and pluralist referral to God, which in fact is chanted in each masonic meeting.

“All glory to the Most High.”

But before his final blessings, Pope Francis shared many of his views and opinions about the global issues currently requiring attention. Climate change seemed to be pivotal among his international interests – an issue which was not raised when addressing the US, for some mysterious and maybe unimportant reason.

Is global warming a hot, positively trending project on the UN’s priority list? The pontiff said that earth itself has rights that must be respected, as if earth was another human being like you. All good and well, considerate and crucial.

What doesn’t make much sense is that only citizens have rights, which are graciously bestowed upon them by their elders and betters – the people who rule them. Who is the one so graciously bestowing rights upon the planet itself? Why, it’s the same crowd again.

What about aliens and disclosure? Could that finally melt all nationality and human identity with Land? How about global terrorism? Or a natural disaster?

Could it possibly be something that has nothing to do with de-population, brother?

1-Chuen_NewForm

The biggest trick the devil ever pulled

Last time the Tzolkin was at the current juncture (13-Oc/1-Chuen) was 11 January 2015, which already feels like a decade ago. Why is that?

A while ago, my friend’s 10 year old boy flipped through my cellphone photo gallery in nimble-quick-finger-breakneck speed. It looked like he was watching a stop-motion animated movie of my life in the past few months.

The scenes switched from work-related photos, to family get-togethers, to cute ones of babies and children, back to some important work stuff, and then all of a sudden – the bare limbs of Summer.

… naturally, he was watching the movie backwards, beginning with today’s photos and going back in time.

It made me wonder about this fascination with documentation of experience fragments (also known as Instagram/Facebook photos, What’sApp ad infinitum).

Then IT made me feel guilty about doing all this wondering. Why am I not in the sacred HEre and NOw?

[…]

Then it was time to go back home and load my Pantax with some new ASA 400 film, all ready to shoot some new grayscale negatives I can take back to my lab to develop.

What this soon-to-be teenager guy did with the emotional retainers that over-populate my cloud drive is that he used them as a time machine to quickly go back in time.

When history ends, it does so on a silent note. There is a gap, a hairline fracture in the everyday routine, something which only a few people can become aware of.

Then something new begins; something that finds no real use in history, let alone flash-drive memories.

THE EMPEROR IS ALWAYS NAKED

Extreme seriousness, displayed today in all newsrooms, eventually dissolves tomorrow into some bad joke – into a twist in the plot. As Michel Foucault (11-Imix, coming up) once said:

“The game is worthwhile insofar as we don’t know what will be the end.”

Because nobody knows what will be the end of anything, there is always a gap through which the unexpected can sneak in. New ideas, mindsets, solutions and philosophies are constantly bubbling under the surface, searching for this elusive gap, and for the right timing – simply because there is a gap.

New threads of reality are now being woven by the unknown artisan.

They are the threads of exposure.

Under the Hood

The previous trecena (1-Edznab) marks the end of the first Tzolkin semester and the current one (1-Chuen) marks the beginning of the second. In other words – the end of winter and beginning of spring. In the solar year, this is called the spring equinox, since the day and night are of the same length. This midpoint of balance exists also in the Tzolkin, since the count of days before 13-Oc and after 1-Chuen are also the same (130).

The Mirror of Reality (1-Edznab ) took me on a sharp and introspective voyage deep inside my mind and soul. To find my way out the other side I now employ the guidance and beauty of the artisan monkey Chuen, also known as the Weaver of Time.

1- Chuen is located around the dead-center of the Tzolking round. After inhaling there is an opening — a Gap. After exhaling there is another one. So it is in the 260-day round. Breathing is interacting with the world; the spaces between breath-pulses is interaction within.

This is consistent with the fact that artistic (Chuen) expression begins from within.

1-Chuen: Seed of imagination

Born on this day: Ronald Reagan (40th US president), Roland Orzabal (Tears for Fears), Dave Gahan (Depeche Mode), Neil Tennant (Pet Shop Boys), Winston Burdett

"No hidden catch, no strings attached. Just freelove." - Dave Gahan (1-chuen)

“No hidden catch, no strings attached. Just freelove.” – Dave Gahan (1-Chuen)

Being well aware of his/her own little imperfections and evils, the artist finds a sublime/sublimated way to harness maladjustment and flaw to create something new, beautiful, and meaningful with slender fingers – something that’s a little closer to perfection.

Both the artist and artisan (who are considered to be one and the same according to the Mayan philosophy) share this trait of truth-seeking. Some artists dedicate their talent to exposing and accentuating what’s wrong in their world. Their presented artwork is an original and fresh display of sanity and truth for everyone to digest, within works of prose, comedy and art.

The artist’s hallmark is an innate ability to rearrange existing materials and ideas in a unique and imaginary way, which actually creates a new reality. S/he takes ideas and perspectives, which were collected during 1-Edznab and before, and weaves them like fresh and colorful threads to create a new tapestry of existence. When existing threads are entwined with new ones – patterns that were never seen before begin to take shape.

1-Chuen is the right time to begin viewing the old and mundane through the curious eyes of a child, who cannot accept a fossilized definition of reality and needs to experiment. It is the perfect time to reinvent myself and redefine the meaning of innocence. To a child, most of reality is interesting and engaging. It seems that there are always new things to create out of the old, and novel experiences are waiting just around the corner.

*

Here is Dave Gahan (1-Chuen), the lead singer of Depeche Mode, singing “Freelove”:

“If you’ve suffered enough

I can understand what you’re thinking of

I can see the pain that you’re frightened of…

Let go of complicated feelings

Then there’s no price to pay.”

2-Eb: Road less traveled

Born on this day: Ben Stiller, Stan Laurel, Steve Gadd, Mark Grace, Bob Fosse

Road less travelled

“I feel like a mile-high pastrami on rye, on the fly from the deli in the sky!” – Ben Stiller (2-Eb) as Alex the Lion in Madagascar

Originality is not a result of comparison; it is an extension of individual uniqueness. Unique talent begins taking form right after the tendency to compare myself to another (or to my past or future self) is overcome. When I begin to follow my own art and viewpoint, moment-by-moment, a new road is blazed, branching off from the one I traveled so far.

On 2-Eb I become aware of my separation from the well-trodden path, and there comes a longing to return to the familiarity and safe shores of whatever’s left behind. In addition, Eb’s humble nature teaches me that art can be found everywhere, even in a simple word.

I realize today that I cannot actually tread another’s road. It’s always been my way, even when it ran parallel to my ex-girlfriend’s way or anyone else’s. TV might convince me that a particular viewpoint I hold TODAY resonates with a couple of middle-aged commentators, who used to be generals. It might even resonate with the masses who are standing under a particularly-colored flag.

The artist’s way is a continuous nurture and celebration of the unique, the subjective, the beautiful.

**

And now for some Steve Gadd (2-Eb) and Paul Simon (2-Edznab) counting the ways to get yourself free from old attachments:

“And then she kissed me, and I realized she probably was right…”

3-ben: Rhythmic Reed

Born on this day: José Mourinho, Joni Mitchell, Sarah Alexander, Pete Sampras, Erwin Schrödinger, Marina Sirtis (ST-TNG), Brendan Gleeson, Achinoam Nini, Jim Henson, Carl Benz

"Multiplicity is only apparent, in truth, there is only one mind." - Erwin Schrödinger (3-ben)

“Multiplicity is only apparent, in truth, there is only one mind.” – Erwin Schrödinger (3-ben)

The 3rd stage of the trecena can be referred to as the driving force behind the process. It takes the theme of stage 1 and challenges it (Ben-east vs. Chuen-west here) in all respects in order to create a background rhythm. 3-Ben provides rhythm to my artistic expression by applying a conduit of destiny between the physical and the spiritual.

The artist within is never content with past achievement and so s/he continuously channels his/her visions down to earth. In turn, these manifested works of art spark spiritual visions and experiences for the artist and the audience. Therefore, 3-Ben can be depicted as a dynamic triangle connecting the Artist, the Audience, and the Art.

***

Here’s Joni Mitchell (3-Ben) singing the ballad of Amelia Earhart (10-Manik, 6 days ago):

“I’ve spent my whole life in clouds at icy altitude
And looking down on everything, I crashed into his arms.”

4-Ix: Define art

Born on this day: Viggo Mortensen, Mark King, Emilio Estevez, Paul Simonon (The Clash), Elia Kazan, Ivo Pogorelić

"He was an arch-manipulator of actors' feelings, and he was extraordinarily talented; perhaps we will never see his like again." - Marlon Brando (9-Cib) commenting on director Elia Kazan (4-ix)

“He was an arch-manipulator of actors’ feelings, and he was extraordinarily talented; perhaps we will never see his like again.” – Marlon Brando (9-Cib) commenting on director Elia Kazan (4-Ix)

In order to convey a coherent message, the urge for artistic expression must be applied within the boundaries of skill. The artist is not necessarily a virtuoso, but rather one who is aware of both his/her strengths and weaknesses. This is the message of 4-Ix. S/he is a master of the subtleties of skill required to turn meandering musings into art that is communicative both within and without.

What further defines the true artist and his/her work is the mystery and inexplicable nature of the Jaguar (Ix), which seems to affect me indirectly, unexpectedly, and profoundly. What is audible in a musical piece only scratches the surface, while the underlying composition and silence between notes eventually taps into and feeds the elusive unconscious.

****

Here’s the song “Running in the family” sung by Mark King (4-Ix) on bass, shining among many other stars:

“And we all have our daddy’s eyes…”

King’s slap technique is phenomenal, especially when considering the fact that he’s singing on top of his playing. Bass guitarist usually don’t do that, since they must be very precise in their playing, to support the band from below.

5-Men: Eye-Power

Born on this day: Muammar Gaddafi, Moshe Dayan, US Civil War began, Xander Berkeley (Year One), Eckhart Tolle

"If you want to make peace, you don't talk to your friends. You talk to your enemies." - Moshe Dayan (5-men), in an interview with Newsweek, 1977

“If you want to make peace, you don’t talk to your friends. You talk to your enemies.” – Moshe Dayan (5-Men), in an interview with Newsweek, 1977

The 5th stage is when the cardinal direction of the trecena (in this case – west) reappears for the first time, and its purpose is guidance and empowerment of the process thus far. The eagle (Men) contributes to the overall artistic transformation process through the gift of vision and freedom.

Vision is the undefined message-in-the-making, which guides artistic expression throughout, from the first brushstroke to the final finishing touch. It begins with an idea that the artist just has to enclose within a vehicle and express to the world. During the course of artistic expression, and with continuous clarity of vision, this idea is refined and honed.

Besides vision, true art means expression that is unique and altogether free from existing convention. Emotional tethers such as fear of rejection can never inspire sincere expression.

Without the eagle’s eye there can be no such thing as creativity.

OK, I ran out of musicians. Back with more music on 7-Caban…

Instead, here’s a voice from the underworld. Muammar Gaddafi (5-Men) gave this speech to the united nations back in 2009 on the Tzolkin date 2-Men. Get a glimpse of what he saw back then, and how it’s all still playing out on the global stage today:

6-Cib: Traditional Art

Born on this day: Oliver Stone, Neve Campbell, Tommy Lee Jones, Kenneth Branagh, James Earl Jones, Edward Bernays, Don Cornelius (Soul Train), Chad Wackerman

"I have weapons you would not dare use. Fear rules man... I will infest the spirit of man so that he uses his science and logic to destroy himself." - James Earl Jones (6-cib) voice-acting the red wizard Ommadon in Flight of Dragons, 1982

“I have weapons you would not dare use. Fear rules man… I will infest the spirit of man so that he uses his science and logic to destroy himself.” – James Earl Jones (6-Cib) voice-acting the red wizard Ommadon in Flight of Dragons, 1982

Wisdom is the deep and sacred repository of our ancestors that can be tapped only from within. At stage 6 the sun-sign of wisdom (Cib) provides much-needed inner strength, so that my personal creative process of reinventing myself continues to flow on.

The essence of Cib means being very aware of limits and staying pragmatic. 1-Chuen’s message of self expression doesn’t mean producing a masterpiece every single day – that’s a typical misconception of many aspiring young artists. Later down the line of maturity, the artist realizes s/he must create more and judge less, or at least – don’t allow judgement to interfere with his/her work. On this day, cib’s practicality dictates keeping it real and refraining from overdoing it.

|*

And now for some Shakespeare. Here’s Kenneth Branagh (6-Cib) playing Hamlet, along with Billy Crystal (6-Ik) as the gravedigger and Nicholas Farrell as Horatio. Indicative of the sun-sign cib, Branagh delivers a sensitive eulogy to his childhood friend – the court jester Yorick, and discusses the limits that death places upon kings and peasants alike:

7-Caban: Earth’s axis

Born on this day: Bill Evans, Richie Blackmore, Shaul Mofaz, Jeff Suppan, Davy Jones (The Monkees)

Caban is the incense of thought rising up to the heavens.

Caban is the incense of thought rising up to the heavens.

Like 7-Kan in the previous trecena, 7-Caban resonates closely with the overall frequency of the Tzolkin half-time break (7th uinal), and marks the final 4 introspection and reflection days of the current uinal.

Caban represents profound sensitivity – an integral component of art, facilitating the subtleties of its creation and the depth of its appreciation. At the 7th stage, this aspect provides purpose to the entire artistic process, and connects conception with manifestation.

In addition, 7-Caban reflects individual expression on a global scale. This means that truth and beauty expressed through art have no borders of land or language. It is simply a pristine reflection of human experience.

From the perspective of the entire Tzolkin round, now is the chance to survey this amazing scenery one last time; a sight which can never be repeated after beginning to come down and manifest. Everything is visible for the first (and last!) time – where I come from and where I am going.

|**

It’s oddly comforting to find the lead singer of a band called “The Monkees” born on the monkey trecena, don’t you think? The singer in this next one is actually the Monkees’ drummer Micky Dolenz (9-Ahau) and not Davy Jones (7-Caban), but I just had to select this next one:

“I’m a believer I couldn’t leave her if I try…”

8-Edznab: Mirror of Harmony

Born on this day: Angela Merkel, Suzanne Vega, George Harrison, Charley Boorman, Ayelet Zurer, Ephraim Kishon, Jorge Posada, Wesley Sneijder, Marcel Marceau

"Without freedom the human mind is prevented from unleashing its creative force." - Angela Merkel (8-edznab)

“Without freedom the human mind is prevented from unleashing its creative force.” – Angela Merkel (8-Edznab)

8-Edznab literally means infinite/harmonious reflections. Reality is a mirror, my internal world is a mirror, my art reflects my psyche, my relationships with other humans reflect to infinity. They all interrelate and synchronize to distill truth.

In Clint Eastwood’s movie Midnight in the garden of good and evil Kevin Spacey (10-Ben) said:”Truth, like art, is in the eye of the beholder.” Before the beholder comes along, truth and art abide side by side in the artist’s heart. S/he always knows when s/he’s faking it, or not going all the way in putting the whole truth across, or worse – trying to be someone else.

8-edznab establishes coherence and clarity within the smallest details and around the whole message.

|***

Here’s George Harrison (8-Edznab) learning the sitar with Ravi Shankar (8-Cauac):

9-Cauac: Almost rain

Born on this day: Muddy Waters, Ray Brown, Ted Turner, Laurie Anderson, Michael Richards, Kaká, Mike Dirnt (Green Day), Sarah Silverman

"Well my mother told my father just before I was born 'I got a boy child comin', gonna be, gonna be a rollin' stone" - Muddy Waters (9-cauac), Rollin' Stone 1950

“Well my mother told my father just before I was born ‘I got a boy child comin’, gonna be, gonna be a rollin’ stone” – Muddy Waters (9-Cauac), Rollin’ Stone 1950

9-Cauac is a gift of perspective, patience, and constant improvement. The artist’s heart never grows old. As long as their bodies can support them they’ll be engaged in the creative process, they’ll have something new to contribute. When they perfect a piece, or bow down before a cheering audience – there’s always something new to learn, some little piece of performance that they’d like to improve next time.

This is the essence of cauac, especially 9-Cauac in this particular trecena.

10-Ahau: Illumination

Born on this day: Pope John Paul II (died 5-Ahau), Edmond de Rothschild, Graham Chapman, Asdrúbal Cabrera, James Van Allen, Annabella Sciorra (Sopranos), Tricky, Mike Patton (Faith no more), François Mitterrand, Viktor Schauberger

"Man is called to a fullness of life which far exceeds the dimensions of his earthly existence, because it consists in sh aring the very life of God." - Pope John Paul II (10-ahau), Encyclical Evangelium vitae

“Man is called to a fullness of life which far exceeds the dimensions of his earthly existence, because it consists in sharing the very life of God.” – Pope John Paul II (10-Ahau), Encyclical Evangelium vitae

This is the last day of the 7th uinal.

10-Ahau is the day the magical art of 1-Chuen manifests. It’s a day to take a step back and appreciate beauty. It’s a very real and physical kind of illumination, which serves to apply creativity to everyday concerns and needs.

In addition, 10-Ahau introduces lofty expectations on the day of manifestation. In other words, once a new creation is complete and available it can be criticized or praised.

Ahau types usually pay attention to the criticism…

||

Here’s the late (but always on time) Graham Chapman (10-Ahau) trying to convey to the masses the one thing they can never digest:

“Look, you’ve got it all wrong. You don’t need to follow me. You don’t need to follow anybody! You’ve got to think for yourselves. You’re all individuals (Crowd: Yes, we’re all individuals). You’re all different (Yes, we are all different). You all have to work it out for yourselves… Don’t let anyone tell you what to do!“”

11-Imix: Upgraded beginning

Born on this day: Michel Foucault, Sarah McLachlan, Simon Le Bon, Joan Baez, John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), Manu Katché, Shirley Manson (Garbage), Roger Taylor (Queen), Eliot Ness

"What is true for writing and for a love relationship is true also for life. The game is worthwhile insofar as we don't know what will be the end." - Michel Foucault (11-Imix) interviewed in "Truth, Power, Self".

“What is true for writing and for a love relationship is true also for life. The game is worthwhile insofar as we don’t know what will be the end.” – Michel Foucault (11-Imix) interviewed in “Truth, Power, Self”.

11-Imix basically means back to school after enlightenment manifested. Imix accentuates the anti-climax theme of the 11th stage of resolution. It’s like an artist coming back home after attending the opening of his gallery showcase – to find a big empty canvas waiting on his easel.

Under the Hood

The 8th uinal begins today.

Everything you ever read about stage 8 (8-Edznab – see above, 8-Lamat, 8-Eb, etc.) is true for the 20 days of the 8th uinal beginning today. This is an aspect of the holographic nature of time and creation as a whole: whatever’s true for micro-time (day-level) is also true for macro-time (20-day uinal, 360-day tun, 7200-day katun, etc.). Likewise, an atom is a universe in itself.

Keywords for the meaning of the 8th stage (a.k.a. 4th Night): harmony, infinity (horizontal 8), balance, order from smallest details to the overall unity.

||*

And now for some Simon Le Bon (11-Imix) and Duran Duran live on stage:

12-Ik: Deep Idea

Born on this day: Sarah Jessica Parker, Al Pacino, Derek Jeter, Roger Federer, Liam Hewlett (Pridigy), Ron Perlman, Jon Polito

"You need people to interchange with, interface with, connect with. Together you’re going to make it, you’re going to do it together, you’re going to put it on, whatever it is." - Al Pacino (12-Ik) in Producing Off-Off-Broadway (2007)

“You need people to interchange with, interface with, connect with. Together you’re going to make it, you’re going to do it together, you’re going to put it on, whatever it is.” – Al Pacino (12-Ik) in Producing Off-Off-Broadway (2007)

The language of art is universal.

A good piece of music reflects truth beyond and before dissecting it into words of appreciation or critique, as does an inspiring sculpture or a good-tasted necklace. On 12-Ik a deep understanding dawns, which involves the wind’s lack of boundaries.

When my communication is artful, i.e., when my art is true in its form and content – there is no frontier on earth that can stop the global spreading of its truth. No language, no distortion, no subversion, no firewall – nothing.

13-Akbal: The Story

Born on this day: Al Di Meola, Neil Simon, Michael Caine, Courtney Love, Diane Keaton, Lee Strasberg, Rabin assassination (born 12-Eb)

"If you can go through life without ever experiencing pain you probably haven't been born yet. And if you've gone through pain and think you know exactly why, you haven't examined all the options." - Neil Simon (13-Akbal) in The Play Goes On

“If you can go through life without ever experiencing pain you probably haven’t been born yet. And if you’ve gone through pain and think you know exactly why, you haven’t examined all the options.” – Neil Simon (13-Akbal) in The Play Goes On

13-Akbal means encapsulating the art lessons of the last fortnight within a fable, to be retold and reflected upon later down the road, especially on moonless nights, by the fire.

13-Akbal also provides the infrastructure upon which a creative future is built. It expands the artful method into perpetuation.

Art has its place and time, and must now dissolve into the next trecena – the seed of basic abundance. The next stop on the journey through time is the most balanced trecena of them all, during which the Tzolkin new year takes place.

||***

Here’s Al Di Meola (13-Akbal), at the tender age of 27, playing solo acoustic guitar in front of a whole lot of people. Around the 5:35 minute mark a dog walks across the stage while Al is playing. His reaction, and that of the crowd, makes me laugh every time. He does regroup quickly and continues his dazzling playing:
